Significant Trees: Garden Suburbs – West of Orange

Location Wiare Reserve

Tree Species Radiata Pine (Pinus radiata)

Physical Description The trees frame the western edge of a community park and dominate the surrounding landscape. These trees are beginning to show signs of intolerance to extreme dry conditions and heat.

Statement of Significance The radiata pines have an historic link with the agricultural history of Orange. The lineal format of the trees suggests a windbreak planting pattern in which large trees were planted to shield the brittle branches of orchard trees. The size and height of the mature trees contrast with the surrounding plantings associated with the 1970’s subdivision of Wiare.
