he quarry site on Racecourse Road, viewed from adjacent to the railway line

Location Racecourse Road, adjacent to the Orange Broken Hill Rail Line.

Statement of Significance

The former quarry site forms a distinctive post-industrial landscape within the suburban fringe of Orange. The quarry site is characterised by large areas of exposed basalt bedrock. Water has half-filled the former quarry and Radiata Pines are growing around its perimeter. The quarry site was identified by the community consultation process as forming a significant part of the Orange landscape. The quarry was operational during the 1960s and 1970s for the mining of Bluestone. Mining operations have now ceased and the quarry is a Schedule 8 Heritage Item of Regional Significance in the Orange Local Environment Plan 2000.
