Statement of Significance
The Garden Suburb was an influential approach to planning that shaped much of Australia’s suburban landscape. The two key subdivisions of this style in Orange were originally titled Westlea and Wiare which have now been absorbed into the suburb of Calare. Westlea and Wiare display key garden suburb planning attributes of low-density housing, extensive street planting, alternative approaches to the traditional grid layout and public parklands. Informal street and garden plantings tend to blur the boundaries between residences and the road verge. Plantings are a mix of both exotic and native trees and shrubs planted in an informal manner.
This precinct has significance as the first area in Orange to be subdivided Binnari Avenue, Westlea following the garden suburb principles.
